A most unique and wonderful folk music concert took place Friday, October the 3rd at 7:30 at the 1st Baptist Church of Ferndale.
Performers included Detroit Music Award winners Stuart Francke, Liz Larin, Robert Tye, Jan Krist and cellist Nadine Deleury. Also featured were singer/songwriter Michael King, Lettie Alston (pianist and composer in residence at Oakland University), soprano Celeste Headlee (who you may know from from WDET), The Lazar/Rottenberg guitar flute duo, soprano Glenda Kirkland and The Greater Detroit Chamber Ensemble (members who perform with the Michigan Opera Theater Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony).
Hosted by composer and performer Mark Gottlieb, this evening was one of the most unique musical events in recent times. It has been Gottlieb's wish to create a concert of some of the more enduring songs in American's musical history combined with some of the finest performers in the Detroit Metropolitan area. The evening featured songs that are not connected to any particular songwriter or personality but rather songs that have become part of this land's deep musical legacy. What made the evening so unique is that they were performed in the wonderful and individual styles of the evening's performers.
The audience heard Stuart Francke's haunting performance of "Shenandoa" and Gottlieb's heart rending arrangement of "A Cowboy's Lament" (The Streets or Laredo) for voices and chamber orchestra. This concert was filled with many wondrous renditions of many great musical treasures.
